ABOUT THE SAN FELIPE DE BARAJAS CASTLE
The San Felipe de Barajas Castle is one of the most important attractions in Cartagena de Indias, a unique and unforgettable experience, which can also be combined with the Hop On Hop Off bus.
The Castle is part of the city fortifications, declared as Historical Heritage of Humanity by THE United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO. Located on San Lázaro hill, this former defensive complex is one of the largest standing military buildings in South America. It was created as a strategic site to observe and prevent invasions of the city, either by land or by the bay of Cartagena.
Being a coastal city, Cartagena de Indias was the target of attacks by French and English pirates. Similarly, the city endured the onslaught of the English navy by Admiral Eduard Vernon, an attack that would go down in history as the most famous that this military construction resisted and would immortalize the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo and Olavarrieta. The Castle is located on the San Lázaro hill, in order to achieve a better visual of the ships that were approaching the city.
Maybe later you could consider the Hop On Hop Off bus, and make the most of your stay in Cartagena de Indias to the fullest. If you are interested, click here to get a combination of HoHo + San Felipe de Barajas Fortress.
